ABOUT VERVAIN
Vervain is a low-tox hair salon in Greenwood, Seattle. It was built around a simple belief — that a salon should feel as good as the results it delivers. For clients, and for the people who work there.

THE SPACE
Calm
but not quiet.
Modern
but not sterile.
Vervain was designed to support your nervous system, not overwhelm it. Fresh air, warm light, lush plants, soft textures — every element of the space is considered.
It's the kind of place where you exhale when you walk in. Where you can talk or sit quietly, learn or simply be taken care of. Where the environment itself is part of the service.
No single aesthetic defines who comes here. We don't specialize in a look — we specialize in a healthier approach that works for everyone.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
Wellness without extremism
Low-tox doesn't mean perfect. It means making better choices, consistently, without judgment.
A little calm in the chaos
Life is busy. Vervain is designed to be the pause in the middle of it — where good work happens without the noise.
Transparency without judgment
We share what we know, explain what we use, and leave the rest up to you.
Professionalism without pressure
High standards don't require rushing, upselling, or making anyone feel like a number.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
What low-tox actually means.
It's not a trend, a label, or an all-or-nothing lifestyle. It's a commitment to making more thoughtful choices — for your hair, your health, and the people doing the work.
Intentional formulation, not fear.
The brands we align with all ask the same question: does this ingredient actually need to be here? Synthetic fragrance can legally hide up to 200 undisclosed chemicals. Silicones create the illusion of healthy hair while blocking real moisture. Sulfates strip color and dry the scalp without much benefit. None of these are necessarily dangerous in a single exposure — but stylists and frequent color clients encounter them every day, for years. Low-tox means removing what doesn't need to be there and keeping what does.
No pressure. Just information.
You don't have to be low-tox outside of this salon. You don't have to overhaul your routine or adopt a philosophy. Education is offered here, never imposed. This is a better option — not the only option.
Better for stylists.
Every founder behind the brands we use developed sensitivities or health concerns from years of working with conventional products. That's not a coincidence — it's the whole reason these brands exist. Stylists handle these products every day. Reducing unnecessary exposure was built into Vervain from the beginning, not added as an afterthought.
What it means for you.
All the products we use are cruelty-free, ammonia-free, and free from synthetic fragrance, silicones, sulfates, and parabens. Not because those are trending words — but because we looked at what's actually in these products and decided they don't need to be there. Gentler formulations mean a more comfortable appointment, less scalp sensitivity, and hair that stays healthier over time. Looking for vegan? Just ask. Most of our products are vegan friendly.
OUR STORY
Built
intentionally.
For a
reason.

Vervain was founded by Jeska Newman, a Seattle hairstylist since 2009. What started as a series of accidents became a very intentional space.
Straight out of beauty school, Jeska found herself renting a chair at an organic salon. She didn't seek it out — she didn't even know what organic meant in that context yet. Over time she started to really understand what it meant. She was hearing stories from fellow stylists who had gotten seriously sick — whose doctors told them to quit doing color entirely. Then came the day she walked into a conventional salon and had to turn around. The air was too heavy to breathe. It was the moment she realized how lucky she was — and knew she could never look back.
The business model came from lived experience. Jeska spent her entire career at that same salon — ten years as a renter, five as an employee. The shift to W-2 in 2020 changed everything — the freedom of a renter, without the administrative weight. Removing that stress allowed her to be more present — more there for her clients in the ways that actually matter. She wanted other stylists to have that same experience.
Vervain is what she built. A low-tox salon with a business model designed around stylist wellbeing — where stylists set their own schedules, their own rates, and show up for their clients without the weight of burnout or business stress holding them back. When a stylist feels good, so does everyone they take care of.
